History

From Paul Horn Einstechtechnik to Hartmetallwerkzeugfabrik Paul Horn GmbH

Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrik Paul Horn GmbH, was founded on November 1, 1969 by Mr. Paul Horn in Waiblingen. Its name then was Paul Horn Einstechtechnik. Right from the start, initially located in Gomaringen and Nehren, the company produced high precision grooving, side turning and slot milling tools for demanding metal working users. In doing so, HORN quickly developed its reputation as an innovative problem solver in the area of machining.

Our customer base today includes customers from the automotive, automotive supply, aerospace, medical and toolmaking and mould making sectors. Once Horn became established in the market, the product range grew constantly as did the number of personnel.

Moving to Tuebingen
As a result, in 1981 Production and Administration moved into a common building in Tübingen in 1981. At the same time, the share capital increased and the name was changed to Hartmetall-Werkzeugfabrik Paul Horn GmbH. By 1991, however, the capacity of this production facility was also no longer sufficient, leading to construction of what is now our main factory building.

Lothar Horn also joined the company in 1991 and took over the position of Managing Director in 1995. In addition Horn Hartstoffe GmbH was founded in 1991 to advance the development of our own carbide grades and geometry concepts.
A further major step was development of the new building in Tübingen in 1999. Management, sales, training and seminar rooms, a demonstration, research and development centre and the complete production including an in-house coating centre were combined on a site with total surface area of approximately 9000 m2.

Between 1993 and 2001, the foreign subsidiaries were established in France, England, the USA and Hungary, in order to be able to reach the relevant markets even better.

High-tech production in-house
In spring 2008, a further production building was established with a production area of 5,500 m2. This extended the Tuebingen headquarters building and the existing production facility with around 6,000 m2. It doubled the production area once more. Together with the commissioning HORN also reorganized the production processes.

In 2011, Horn Hartstoffe GmbH opened a new building with a total of around 5,000 m². This made all molding processes for carbide tools being available in-house (investments in 2011/2012: approx. 30 million Euros). Since 2013, the new plant is producing blanks and wearing parts made of carbide for third-party companies.

Doubling capacity again
In the summer of 2016 another production building with an area of 15,000 m² was put into operation. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Tübingen headquarters of the Paul Horn GmbH and is the largest industrial building in Tübingen at this time. The main areas are carrier manufacturing, coating and logistics.

Since December 2016, the new administrative area provides 3,500 m2 of space on six levels. Beside offices there are seminar rooms for increasingly important customer trainings as well as for internal trainings in the context of personnel development. Clear architecture and bright rooms provide space for 120 employees.

Today, around 1,400 employees worldwide are enthusiastically impressed by the fact that HORN is and remains the technology leader. This is ten times the number of employees there was 20 years ago. With annual new appointments, Paul Horn GmbH wants to create further jobs for the region in the future.
